Are floods pretty common in the part of the country where you reside? Well, if your answer is in the affirmative, then there is something which you need to be aware of. Flood can cause extensive water damage and if you do not act with alacrity and promptness, your home can suffer perpetual damages. Heavy flood can cause flooding of the basement and this can make things a lot worse. However, it does not mean that every time your basement is flooded, you need to hire professional help. If the water damage is not limited, you can take care of the basement yourself. Here is how you can fix a basement which has been flooded.

To fix a flooded basement, the most important thing that you need to do is pump all the water out of the basement. You can rent a water pump to drain out all the water. If that is not possible, you will have to mop the basement to get rid of the water. Next, take out all the stuffs from the basement. These items have to be washed, sanitized and dried before you can use them once again. The damaged carpets have to be discarded since carpets in the basements usually do not survive floods. Then you have to clean all the surfaces of the basement using bleach. The bleach solution will help in getting rid of bacteria. Then you must turn on the fan in your basement and allow the basement to dry out. Once the basement dries out, you can lay new flooring.
